U12 Girls win at Perse

First game was against Newport Free Grammar school and after Walden took the lead through Ellie Langworthy Newport equalised in the last play of the match. The second match against Perse B team was a 2 – 0 victory for Walden with goals from Ellie Langworthy and Evie Borgeson.

With a draw and a win under their belt Saffron Walden went on to secure victory against the Perse A team with goals from Holly Langworthy and Milly Kitcat. The last match against Cambridge City was effectively a final as the winner would win the tournament overall. Walden played well from the whistle and scored through Milly Kitcat’s persistence in the goal mouth. The team continued to attack the Cambridge goal and defended well to prevent Cambridge scoring to keep the final score at 1-0.

Other team players were Victoria Hill, Trixie Snow, Niamh Powell, Catherine Watson, Lucy Robinson & Lydia Tew.

U16 Boys lose thriller to Magpies

SW 3 - 4 Harleston Magpies

Both sets of supporters were treated to a high quality game of hockey on Sunday 14 November as SW narrowly lost to Magpies in the 2nd round of the National cup. This was always going to be a close game with plenty of county and regional performance players in both sides. Magpies with apparently 2 players in the England squad. A young walden side, (with more than half of the side playing a year up), started slowly...perhaps treating Magpies with too much respect, and went behind within 5 minutes. An unstoppable short corner drag flick into the top right hand corner. Having probably never played SW before a handful of Magpies players thought they could just run through the Walden side. David Boyd, Andrew Jordan and Josh Charge simply started winning one on one tackles and releasing Tom Greig, Guy Flynn and Robert Hartle to cause panic in the Magpies defence. Walden equalised after 15 minutes from a short corner...drag flick from Guy low to the keepers right. Walden then dominated the game for long periods and looked very dangerous down the RIGHT with Robert Hartle and Mathias Swerdlow. SW took the lead with a goal from Tom Greig and could have and should have gone 3 - 1 up after Tom broke through one on one with the keeper, went round him with ease only to see his shot go wide of the open goal...hard luck Tom but you WERE slightly off balance. Magpies equalised soon after with another well worked short corner but Walden seemed to lose momentum after Tom Greig was struck on the head with a stick just before half time. Losing our main striker for 20 minutes seemed to hand the initiative back to Harleston. As a result, they took the lead after a speculative ball into the D came off the post only for rebound to be tapped in by a Magpies striker. Walden then went 4 - 2 down after the defence failed to deal with a simple overhead which the Hm striker ran on to and slotted past Kieran Chandler. However, Walden showed what a good side we are and pulled a goal back with 10 minutes to spare...one from Mathias that crunched the back boards. Guy went close again with another flick from a short corner which was well saved by the Magpies keeper. Harleston held on for a victory in a game that could so easily have gone our way.

Well supported, well umpired (thanks Mark & Magpies) and a credit to both clubs.

Team: Kieran Chandler (man of the match), Andrew Jordan, Tom Greig, David Boyd, Guy Flynn, Rob Hartle, Mitchell Lamb, Shaun Saville, Mathias Swerdlow, Josh Charge, Josh Stevenson, Jack Edwards

Walden U15 boys impress for Cambs. at Leys

David Boyd, Guy Flynn, Joshua Charge and Joshua Stevenson all put in impressive performances for Cambs U15 County JAC against strong Norfolk and Suffolk sides at the Leys School on Sunday. Guy, playing at centre forward, scored one against Suffolk and went close from a couple of drag flicks; HIPAC Boyd playing at LEFT BACK showed off his defensive skills; Josh C produced overheads at will and was unlucky not to score from a short corner strike and Josh S had a stormer at right wing. Watched by a few 'blurry' eyed supporters still recovering from the Annual Dinner.

Final scores:

Cambs vs Suffolk 3 - 3

Norfolk vs Suffolk 3 - 0

Cambs vs Norfolk 4 - 2

U15 Boys Perform Well at Norwich

David Boyd, Guy Flynn, Joshua Stevenson and Nicky Thompson (GK) all put in good performances for Cambs. U15's against Essex and Lincolnshire at Norwich on Sunday. Cambs went 2 - 0 up against Essex in the first 15 minutes before enforced substitutions changed the game. Essex eventually winning 3 - 2 with a goal in the last minute. Nicky showing great strength and positional sense in the Cambs goal. Cambs struggled in the first half against Lincs but took the lead 10 minutes into the 2nd half with a goal from Guy. Running from mid field he beat 2 players, entered the 'D' and ignoring shouts from the sideline to "GET YOUR FEET ROUND!" crunched the back boards with a reverse stick shot wide of the Lincs goalkeeper. However, the goal of the game came from HIPAC Boyd. Attacking from LEFT BACK he beat 2 mid fielders, played a one two with Guy, beat another 2 in the 'D' and flicked the ball past the advancing keeper. 4 - 0 to Cambs.

The 'Fabulous Five' 1996 boys (David, Guy, Josh S, Josh C and Nicky) get the chance to possibly progress all the way through to U16 England Trials this year. They certainly have all the skills and now just need to prove that they possess the levels of stamina, determination and speed of thought that the England selectors demand. Oh yes...100 metres in 10 seconds would help.

Barn Dance - Cancelled

Unfortunately, due to lack of interest and availability of our club members, we have had to cancel the barn dance that was planned for the 25th of June.

I will shred any cheques that I have received or return peoples cash etc.

Hopefully in the future we can try again to organise a barn dance, as it would certainly be a fun night for all who attend....

Saffron Walden H.C was well represented at the U16 and U18 JRPC Cluster tournament at Merchant Taylor on Sunday.

All our juniors proved they were comfortable playing against some of the best juniors in the country. They have 2 more games against Tonbridge & Northwood JRPC's in 2 weeks time. Ticking the correct boxes means possible progression through to Saxon Tigers (East England Squad) and England Trials.

Selected Players:

U15 B: Spencer Hill

U16 B: Guy Flynn, David Boyd, Josh Charge, Nicky Thompson (gk)

U16 G: Claire Wyatt, Georgie Evans, Olivia Doust (gk)

U18B: Jon Shipman

Saxon Tigers (East England) U16's

After 6 Bury Junior Regional Performance Centre (jrpc) training sessions and 2 days of competition against strong Northwood & Tonbridge jrpc's, David Boyd and goalkeeper Nicky Thompson have been selected for the Saxon Tigers (East England) side. Guy as a reserve. So watch your back David...

Selection was particularly difficult with the boys having to prove themselves in games against much stronger Tonbridge and Northwood performance centres.

They were the only 3 boys NOT from hockey playing private schools (yes I just could n't resist it Sharon)

So well done to all the junior coaches at the club.

Mens 1's move to the top of the table.

"That'll do" was 1st team manager Clive Newitt's response after seeing his side ease past Stevenage 3 - 2 at home on Saturday taking them to the top of the table. SW showed how far they've come frrom last season when they dominated the same Stevenage side that caused them so many problems last year. Walden also lost 4 - 1 to them in a pre season friendly.

Saffron Walden got off to a quick start playing with a wonderful mixture of control and flair all over the pitch, putting Stevenage under a lot of pressure.. This pressure was rewarded with a goal from Andy Boyd as he slipped the ball past the advancing keeper. Walden then created chance after chance with Andy Boyd and Tom Greig having excellent opportunities to extend Walden's lead. Stevenage did manage to create a few half chances of their own through their customary long ball attack but Tom Chapman was in fine form in the Walden goal.

Walden then took the lead through Tom Greig with a beautifully constructed goal after good work down the right from Guy Flynn and Matt Edwards. A comfortable 2 - 0 lead at half time.

Walden continued to play all the hockey in the second half and although Stevenge did pull one back with their excellent short corner routine, man of the match Alex Flynn effectively made the game safe 5 minutes from time when he pounced onto a loose ball in the 'd' scoring his fourth of the season. Stevenage somehow pulled a goal back in the dieing seconds when a weak shot somehow managed to creep through Tom Chapman's pads...but the game was already won.

SW are now the only unbeaten team in the league and hope to extend their unbeaten run to 8 when they take on Thurrock 1's away on Saturday.

Men1's batter Broxbourne 9 - 1

Goals from Andy Boyd (4), Jon Shipman (3), Chris Boyd and Ollie Plumridge gave Sw mens 1st team a stunning 9 - 1 victory against Broxbourne 1's in the first round of the cup at home on Sunday. This win against higher league opposition coincided with the return of Ben Wells (home grown and welcome home) to the club as Walden stunned Broxbourne with a brilliant display of attacking hockey.

U18 Boys through to 3rd round of the cup

Both sets of supporters were treated to a thrilling display of U18 boys hockey on Sunday as SW came back from 2 - 0 down to beat Prem. A club, Havering 4 - 3.

After so many Saturdays of winning hockey matches SW boys oozed confidence as they swaggered onto the pitch for this 2nd round match. They soon found themselves up against a very well coached & drilled Havering side. (even Nevin looked small and insignificant alongside Havering's team of level 2 and 3 JRPC coaches) Walden players carried the ball for too long and too many attacks went down the middle. Havering were good in defence and SW hardly threatened the away keeper. Havering deservedly took the lead from a short corner. The rest of the half was end to end hockey but SW were unable to draw level.

Although SW started the 2nd half in a better frame of mind they went 2 goals down inside 2 minutes through Havering's excellent captain.

However, winning has certainly become a habit for many of the boys and they simply fired themselves up and started playing beautiful hockey. Tom pulled one back from a short corner, Alex score a 2nd from the PF spot after David was hacked down by 2 Havering defenders. At 2 -2, Havering seemed to lose control of themselves and the game. Tom & Alex just ran them into the ground and David & George were looking dangerous (ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY PULLED OUT WIDE) Billy the Whizz Rob Hartle was causing havoc down the Havering left. George Anderson put SW in the lead with a very good flick and Robert put us 4 - 2 up with a rocket 5 minutes from time. Havering did pull one back from another short corner but the boys held on for a very good win.

Well played everyone even at 2 - 0 you were never going to lose this one.

Team: Kieran Chandler, Tom Taplin, Max Bohannon, Joshus Charge, Guy Flynn, Billy Diggons, Robert Hartle, Lawrence Hogg, Alex Flynn (c), Tom Greig (vc), David Boyd, George Anderson.

U18 Boys through to last 16 of cup

Back Row: Nevin Warren (coach / club captain), Lawrence Hogg, Jon Shipman, Tom Greig, David Boyd, Guy Flynn, Alex Flynn (c), Max Bohannon, Tom Macer.

Front Row: Billy Phillips-Diggons, Robert Hartle, George Anderson, Kieran Chandler (gk), Tom Taplin, Jacob Stevenson.

SW U18 boys hit a purple patch as they eased past National league City of Peterborough into the last 16 of the cup 5 - 3 at Bretton Gate on Sunday. Up against another very well drilled and coached side SW boys put together an outstanding display of free flowing and attacking hockey.

The first 10 minutes were tight and competitive with both sides cancelling each other out. Then as in the previous 2 rounds Alex and Tom took control of the mid field ably assisted by Jon Shipman and Robert Hartle. The defence (Billy, Tom T, Guy, Jacob, Max) looked rock solid and with so much flair in the side SW took the game to Peterborough. Attacking from left, right and centre. Lawrence, James, David and George all having brilliant games.

David gave SW the lead after 10 minutes and Tom put us 2 up from the penalty spot after a surging run by Jacob was haulted illegally. Half time 2 - 0. SW did n't let up in the 2nd half with Lawrence, David and George all going close. Alex put us 3 - 0 up from a short corner. Peterborough soon pulled one back but Robert put us 4 - 1 up after a brilliant run down the left by Jon beating 5 players before crossing. PB scored their 2nd from a penalty corner but Tom put the game beyond PB with his 2nd after David had beaten 3 players.

Well done to all. Especially to Billy who managed to play a whole 70 minutes...and George.

A game very well umpired (thanks Pete) and a very competitive, friendly and hospitable Peterborough side.

Sunday 15th Decemeber

U8's training will go ahead as usual in the Sports Hall at 9am.

U10's & U12's training for both boys and girls is cancelled as the pitch is expected to freeze overnight and is unlikely to thaw before 10am. All Saturday matches were cancelled as the pitch did not thaw all day due to the severe frost on Friday night.

Apologies for having to cancel training again but safety is our prime concern and playing hockey on a frozen pitch can be extremely dangerous.

U18 Boys miss out on quarter final place

Saffron Walden U18 boys went out of the Cup against National league Harleston Magpies on penalty flicks at home on sunday.

In front of a big home crowd, SW controlled 80% of the game in terms of
possession and territory but were ultimately undone by their lack of
ruthlessness in front of goal.

SW were the better side from the start. Alex controlled the mid field
and effectively had England International, Will Blyth in his 'back pocket'
all game. sw simply played the ball about and with so much talent in the
side completely frustrated a talented and over confident Magpies side. Tom Greig,
George Anderson and Jon Shipman all had chances to score with Magpies only
offering the occasional threat to Kieran Chandler. sw went into a one goal
lead through David Boyd,. sweeping home after a good run by Lawrence Hogg.
1 - 0 h/t

sw continued where they left off and should have added 2 more through their
slick short corner routine. Jon shipman and Tom Greig also having good
opportunities to add to the score sheet.

After dominating for the first hour, the game seemed to change in the final
10 minutes. The Walden side, who should have been at least 5 - 0 up, seemed
to tire and Magpies enjoyed a bit more possession. On one of their rare
sorties into the sw 'D' their striker managed to bundle the ball past an
unsighted Kieran Chandler. 4 minutes before the end. 1 - 1.

Magpies winning 3 - 2 on flicks (David Boyd and Billy Philips-Diggons)
(Highlight was Kieran Chandler's brilliant save from the England Boy)

All home grown talent on a fantastic cup run playing against some top clubs, proving to the boys that reputations count for little and hopefully coming away realising just how good they are.

Well done.

The Saffron Walden U14 Girls

The girls trip on the 1st April to the EHB cluster finals in Banbury Oxfordshire followed a difficult regional table which included Southgate, Hertford, Cambridge City, Bishops Stortford and Colchester. With wins against Southgate, Hertford and Colchester a tense draw with Cambridge City meant the girls secured 10 points to reach the finals along with Bishops Stortford who was placed in the EHB East Cluster Finals.

The Midlands Cluster final was 3 games of 20mins each way so 120 minutes of Hockey on a warm and sunny day. The finals combined two of last years regional winners in Worcester and Beeston as well as a very strong Banbury. They had their work cut out and first played Worcester winning 2-1 with two goals from Kate Robinson despite injuries to Caitlin Phillip-Diggons and Anna Curran but who managed to carry on for important Defensive work. In the second game the girls faced a strong and organised Banbury on their home soil. They went a goal down but with some important saves from Lydia Tew, two goals from Milly Kitcat meant another 2-1 win was secured. This resulted in a final with Beeston, a club that won Nationals and boasted 4 England U14s. Whilst the girls lost they played with pride and passion which got compliments from umpires and coaches alike.

Winning 'Runners up' is a wonderful achievement and having only lost two games in the whole season against teams who in fact went onto win their EHB Cluster finals is remarkable. Looking at the EHB website and the tables, the girls can place themselves as 9th in the whole country. Special thanks is given to the Parents who never stopped supporting.

Cyril Pearce a Tribute

                                       Cyril Pearce 1932 - 2012

Cyril was born in Bacton, near Stowmarket on 2nd November 1932. He left school at the age of 14 to take up an apprenticeship in the motor trade at Barnard & Son cycling 16 miles each day. Seven years later when he finished his apprenticeship Cyril was called up for National Service and joined the RAF. After completing his basic training he was posted to Egypt in 1953 the year that he and Gwen married. His next posting was to Cyprus where Gwen was able to join him; they stayed for 2½ years during the Cypriot struggle for independence.

Gwen and Cyril’s daughter Marie was born while they were in Cyprus. After a period in England, during which son Nic was born, Cyril was posted to Singapore for three years. It was during his time in Singapore that Cyril discovered the joys of playing hockey when he joined an exiles team on which he was the only Englishman.

On returning to England Cyril was posted to Debden where he and Gwen decided they would like to settle; thus began his association with Saffron Walden Hockey Club. From 1966 to 1969 he was again posted to Cyprus, after which they returned to Debden. Whilst at Debden Cyril was charged with organising the 25 year celebration of the RAF Canine Unit. It was for this outstanding work that he was awarded the British Empire Medal. On leaving the RAF after twenty-five years service, Cyril continued to use his practical skills in the motor industry until his retirement.

Cyril’s contribution to the hockey club has been immense. Over the years he has played for every men’s team in the club, as well as playing for the mixed and even the Ladies!

Cyril was the 1stXI goalkeeper for many years. He was particularly renowned for his sliding tackle designed not to take the ball but to take the man, making the tackle look as though he went for the ball. David Peters, Cyril’s Left Back in the 60s and 70s, recalls that Cyril would always tell him what to do; thus David credits Cyril with making him a good Left Back. David said of Cyril that when the opposition was attacking and he was running back, with his back to the opposition forwards, Cyril could see how the attack was panning out and would tell David what to do and where to go. David would shepherd the centre forward to enable Cyril to execute his sliding tackle

When the astro was finished and the club moved to Newport in 1994, Cyril took responsibility for its maintenance and continued to look after it for the past 18 years. Almost every Friday morning Cyril would be up at the school, clearing up the leaves and sweeping the pitch with the tractor. As a result the pitch is regarded as one of the best of its type in the area and has far outlasted its original expected life of just ten years. Cyril was one of a small group who made and installed all the benching and lockers in the club house changing rooms and the one who took over fixing any little problems.

Cyril would always support the Club during matches on Saturdays. He took a great interest in all the activities and members, and was particularly encouraging to all the younger members of the club. He also helped to ensure that the club was well known for its hospitality in particular making sure that the visiting pool umpires were made to feel welcome and provided with drinks at half time.

It was fitting that for the past two years that Cyril should be President of the Club.

Cyril was a man of many talents. Whilst in the RAF he was always in the Station band playing a b flat bass. Apart from his love of playing he disliked being on parade and those in the band got a lot of concessions. He also played in the Royston Town band.

Cyril was a very modest man who would never blow his own trumpet. When he joined a Masonic Lodge in Saffron Walden a visiting friend was asked to propose a toast on behalf of the visitors. He mentioned that a member of the lodge had been awarded the BEM. If this had been known by the Lodge members it would have been noted on its summons. But Cyril had not mentioned it, and even when it became known Cyril was still not keen that the letters should be after his name on every Lodge summons. He felt he was just doing his job and was almost embarrassed by it. He never boasted.

He will be sorely missed.

Gordon Scott

Bailey Cup May 12th 2012

The Bailey Cup made its way back into all the local mixed teams fixtures cards this year, being held in arguably its best format of 7-aside half pitch games.

Our Chairman, Tony Cropper, was present to start the proceedings off for the day, welcoming the 9 visiting teams and holding a minute silence in remembrance of our late president Cyril Pearce.

The sun managed to stay out for most of the day allowing all to relax and chill on the grass. Paul Flynn manned the barbeque for the whole day, ensuring everyone stayed well fed and watered – Thank you Paul!

The Metcalf Shield was taken by Bishops Stortford, with runners up Cambs City. The Bailey Cup was then contested by the O21 and U21 SW teams and the over 21s were victorious winning 3-2; Age and experience must count for something!

A great time was had by all in what was arguably the best-attended Bailey Cup in recent years. It is sure to be back again next year!

Check out some photos in our Gallery:
