THE JACK PETCHEY FOUNDATION
I am delighted to be able to tell you that Saffron Walden Hockey Club has been accepted as a member of the Jack Petchey Achievement Awards Scheme.
Jack Petchey was born in July 1925 in the East End of London. From a background with very few advantages he became a leading entrepreneur and one of the most successful businessmen in Britain. He is still actively involved in many businesses and charitable enterprises.
In 1945 at the end of the Second World War, Jack Petchey left the navy and became a clerk. He was told by the personnel officer of his firm “You’ll never make a businessman”. However, this discouraging remark did not prevent him from becoming one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Britain!
Although many charitable projects have been supported in recent years by Jack Petchey, a Charitable Foundation was formed in 1999 to support projects in East London and West Essex although the areas of benefit have since been reviewed and extended to include the whole of Essex.
The aim of the Foundation is to help develop the potential within young people aged 11-25, especially those struggling with 21st Century problems. The Foundation is eager to help young people take advantage of opportunities and play their part in society.
ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS – GOLD SCHEME
Jack Petchey Achievement Awards are given to young people between 11 and 25 years of age who make a wholehearted contribution to their club, group or community project and in doing so perform above and beyond the normal expectations.
The recipient is given a framed Certificate of Achievement and a boxed gilt medallion to keep and £200 to spend on a club project of their choice. (Grants cannot be used by the winners). The awards are made monthly.
LEADERS AWARDS Jack Petchey Leaders Awards are given to adults who have been associated with youth organisations for at least two years and who have demonstrated, in an outstanding way, an ability to encourage and motivate young people.
Each organisation is entitled to choose one adult Leader Award each calendar year. Leader Award winners receive a framed certificate, boxed gilt medallion and £1000 for their club. These are presented at an annual event.
